Mineral-Mediated Attenuation of Nitroaromatic Compounds

This project focuses on the remediation of groundwater contaminated with energetic compounds such as nitroaromatic munitions and explosives. Such compounds enter groundwater systems primarily through current and former ammunition production plants and other military establishments. Remediation strategies in this project include abiotic reduction mediated by naturally occurring iron-bearing minerals. Assessing the efficacy of this project will focus on providing proof to land stakeholders of sufficient contaminant degradation in the subsurface in addition to proposing strategies to accelerate and maintain current reduction processes.
